Robotics terms

Robotics & Automation Glossary

This glossary explains the robotics terms manufacturers meet when comparing cobots, tooling, safety concepts and integration quotes. Each definition gives a direct answer first, then points to the technical context on BotNots where the term affects payload sizing, model selection or application planning.

Glossary terms

EOAT

End-of-arm tooling

The gripper, tool or process hardware mounted to the robot wrist to interact with the part or process.

Payload

The rated load a robot can carry under defined conditions, including the part and tooling.

Repeatability

How closely a robot can return to the same taught position over repeated cycles.

TCP Speed

Tool center point speed

The movement speed of the tool center point at the robot wrist or mounted tool.

DOF

Degrees of freedom

The number of independent axes a robot can move, commonly six for industrial cobot arms.

IP protection class

Ingress protection rating

A two-digit enclosure rating that screens how well robot tooling resists dust and water ingress in real production environments.

Cobot lifting column

7th-axis vertical lift

A vertical axis that raises or lowers the cobot base to extend usable stack height or machine access.
